Streamlining of your domain portfolio
Experience shows that domain portfolios, irrespective of size, are often inconsistent when it comes to correct WHOIS information. The reason for this is that a registration policy for the ownership and administrative contact has only rarely been established. The result is a portfolio with domains specifying a large number of different owners and administrative contacts.
- Inconsistent ownership information
The consequences of incorrect ownership information may be serious. Examples of such incorrect information are old company names and former employees/providers. Sometimes the company is not even the rightful owner of the domain name. - Inconsistent administrative contact information
A functioning admin-c e-mail address is critical to the owner of a domain.
The administrative contact is considered the representative of the owner. If the e-mail address does not work, the owner will not receive important information about the domain, such as if a domain dispute is referred to arbitration. In the worst case, the owner will lose the domain.
The benefits from streamlining the domain portfolio are a reduction in risks, a higher degree of control and a general overview of ownership and contact information.
What is streamlining?
Streamlining is the updating of ownership and administration information in your domain portfolio with all registration authorities. With identical ownership information you can be sure that your company is the rightful owner of your domains, and independent of former employees and providers. As regards administrative contact information we recommend that you use a generic e-mail address, such as domainmanager@company.uk and not e.g. peter.smith@company.uk, as Peter Smith may retire from the company at any time. However, some domain authorities do require that admin-c is a real person.
